ESP32 Agent

No video from Screen Mirroring

The AirPlay source must be an iPhone. Screen Mirroring from macOS is not supported. The handshake can look healthy while the board never receives video, so ESP32 iPhone Agent has no picture to act on.

What this looks like

Mirroring can show as connected. The AirPlay handshake can look healthy while the board never receives video. The board’s status can say "ap":"connected" without streaming, and a screenshot request can answer err no video.

That is what happens when the source is a Mac. Stop mirroring from macOS and start it from the iPhone. A Mac is not a stand-in for the phone.

Mirror from the iPhone

  1. Plug the board into the iPhone. In the app, finish Plug Me In. With Handsy CLI, run esp32agent pair on the computer.
  2. Join the board’s Wi-Fi and keep the phone close. That hotspot has no internet; the phone uses cellular data for the model.
  3. Open Control Center → Screen Mirroring → ESP32 Agent. ESP32 Agent is the receiver name.
  4. Keep the iPhone unlocked. Locking stops Screen Mirroring. Switch to another screen and check that the preview changes before you start a task.

If the board is missing from the list, the antenna, the hotspot password, and pairing are covered in the FAQ.

The picture is stuck, slow, or says “err no video”

This is a different problem from a Mac that never sends video. A frozen preview, a task that starts with err no video, or runs that repeat the same action and look very slow were reported in issue #25, #29 and #44. App 1.0 and board firmware 0.2.2 fix the known causes: the video now resumes on its own after a reconnect, also after the phone has shown a still screen for a long time.

  1. Check the versions. The app version is in Settings → About; the board firmware is in Settings → Board. Update the board there if it offers an update: Update ESP32 Agent firmware.
  2. Reconnect mirroring. Stop the task, turn Screen Mirroring off, then pick ESP32 Agent again. Keep the iPhone unlocked.
  3. Change screens. Go to another screen and check that the preview follows.
  4. Retry the task. If it still stalls, open the run in Runs and choose ⋯ → Export trace, then send it with your versions to [email protected].

Video that works but is very slow can mean the app has no Local Network permission, so the picture falls back to Bluetooth. See iPhone joins home Wi-Fi instead of the ESP32 Agent hotspot.

If there is still no video

  • In the app, open Settings → Diagnostics → Video while mirroring is on, and send what you see to support.
  • A boot line video: no PSRAM for the GOP buffer means the board has no usable PSRAM. Use the standard XIAO ESP32S3 with 8 MB PSRAM.
  • How the pieces fit together: How ESP32 iPhone Agent works. Logs: Debugging & logs.

The installer says “Failed to connect with the device”

A board running Handsy firmware may not offer a serial port the installer can use. Unplug it, hold BOOT while plugging it back in, then click Connect board again. Full steps: Failed to connect with the device.
