# Help a user install Handsy firmware

Use this guide when the user explicitly asks for help setting up Handsy. The installation page is https://handsy.tech/install. Help the user understand the page, check their equipment, and resolve connection problems. The user chooses the USB device and confirms installation.

## What the user needs

- A standard Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3 with 8 MB flash and 8 MB PSRAM. This installer does not support the Sense, Plus, or other ESP32 boards.
- A computer running desktop Chrome or Edge.
- A USB cable that carries data. A charging-only cable will not work.

An iPhone or Safari cannot perform this installation. The computer is needed for this setup step; afterward, the board works directly with the iPhone and Handsy app. This flow does not require compiling code, Arduino, OTA, browser extensions, or an account login.

## Install from the webpage

1. Ask the user to connect the board to their computer, then open https://handsy.tech/install in Chrome or Edge.
2. Read the page's actual release status. Proceed only when it offers a compatible stable firmware release. If firmware has not been published, stop and explain that installation is unavailable. Do not keep trying alternative downloads. If the release check fails, use **Check again** or try later.
3. Explain that installation replaces the firmware and data currently on the board. If the user needs that content, they should preserve it before continuing.
4. Have the user click **Connect board** and select their board in the browser's USB device chooser. The user must make this selection themselves.
5. Let the user review and click the official ESP Web Tools installation confirmation. Keep the board connected while the tool writes and verifies the firmware.
6. Confirm success from the actual ESP Web Tools completion state. An animation, elapsed time, or this guide is not evidence of success. After confirmed completion, tell the user to unplug the board from the computer, plug it into their iPhone, and open Handsy for the remaining setup.

## If the board is missing

Check the data cable and close other applications using the serial port. If necessary, hold **BOOT** while reconnecting the board, release it, and try **Connect board** again.

## Firmware source

The webpage uses a same-origin manifest for the fixed release attachment `handsy-xiao-esp32s3.factory.bin`. Do not substitute arbitrary binary files. The legacy `v0.1.0` release is incompatible with this setup.
